Israel's 12 Tribe History

Question:  How did each Tribe contribute to the overall society of ancient Israel?

Google: Two main social structures competed in ancient Israel.  The people were united under the monarchy, which organized the state for administrative and taxation purposes.  At the same time, the Israelites held fast to their tribal associations.  Such tribal loyalties often came into conflict with the interests of the state.

The early years of the monarchy (11th century BCE), for example, were plagued by a constant struggle between Benjamin, the tribe of Saul (Israel’s first king), and Judah, the tribe of David.  The tensions between tribe and state were among the main factors in the division of the monarchy into two separate states after the death of Solomon (928 BCE).

The economy of ancient Israel.

Field labour and craft production was of central importance in the lives of ancient Canaanites and Israelites. The economy of both the Bronze and Iron Age populations was dependent on the harvest and the production of valuable trade goods such as metals worked into jewellery or weapons, and ceramics.

What contributions did the ancient Israelites make?

The greatest achievements of the Israelites were their architecture, monotheistic religion, Ten Commandments, and their military.  However, they were not enough to save the civilization.  They fell due to the decline in leadership within the civilization, and attacks and conquest from the Assyrians and Babylonians.

What was the Israelites greatest contribution?

These people were the Hebrews, known also as Israelites or, later, Jews.  Their early contribution to humankind was not wealthy empires or ground-breaking technology.  Rather, it was the revolutionary idea that there was only one god, a belief known as monotheism.

What kind of society was ancient Israel?

Ancient Israel was a monarchy that was run as both a political and religious entity.  The king ruled on behalf of Yahweh and was supposed to uphold the religious covenants.  In the royal court, the king would have a scribe and cupbearer.

Who did ancient Israel trade with?

The ancient Israelites developed a thriving trade with Egypt, Cyprus and Greece, aided significantly by ports on the Mediterranean Sea.  Many of Israel's native goods were traded, including fish, olives, pottery, and metals and minerals from the Taurus Mountains.

Why are the Israelites important in world history?

The Israelites left an extraordinary religious and ethical legacy.  They were some of the first monotheists, worshipping a single god, whom they referred to as Yahweh.  Their religious texts from the ancient world, including the Hebrew Scriptures, served as the foundational texts of Judaism.
